Russell Godden Studio offers design services for a variety of project types and scales, including residential and historic spaces. We take gardens through every stage of the design process to deliver the clients vision from concept to completion. Based in Exeter, we handle projects across the whole of the UK.
The Garden Design Stages
Stage 1
Initial Consultation

Initial consultation with the client to discuss requirements and objectives

Stage 2
Sketch Design

Development of a written brief which clearly outlines the design process and the associated costs

Site analysis, including identifying planning constraints, which inform the design and future decisions

Where necessary we can commission a topographical survey for the client

An initial materials and planting palette

Sketch plans of design options

3D visualizations of design options

Precedent images and other sketches, which help convey the design options to the client
Stage 3
Outline Design

Development of an initial masterplan and specification

Advise on the appointment of consultants, planning permissions and other regulations where necessary

Advise on the landscape contractor options
Stage 4
Detailed Design

A series of plans for tender and construction, including a detailed masterplan

Detailed planting plans and schedules

Construction drawings for details, such as steps, gates and water features

Consultation with specialists, e.g. irrigation, drainage, lighting
Stage 5
Tendering

Advise on the landscape contractor appointment process

Obtain quotes and help the client select the best contractor for the project
Stage 6
Construction & Completion

Site visits to monitor the construction progress

Setting out of all planting on-site

Coordination with third party contractors, consultants and suppliers

Planting Design Services
Planting design is led by Russell Francis Godden, who is skilled at creating impactful and immersive planting schemes with a strong sense of place. His innovative approach to planting focuses on the creation of multi-layered plant ecosystems with maximum impact and minimum input.

Russell has previously designed planting for many high-profile projects across the UK and Europe. Previous projects include: Rietlandpark in Amsterdam, Fairchild's Garden in Hackney and The Esplanade in Exmouth.
