Taunton Garden

This suburban residential garden is located at the southern edge of the historic market town of Taunton. The project is currently in progress with construction to be completed in spring 2025. The garden design aims to transform the space from open patches of grass and trees into a series of immersive and interesting spaces that are fully accessible for the owners.

With the design, we wanted to create an exploratory journey as one moves through the garden where each space has a distinct character and provides a different experience for users. Multi-stem Amelanchier lamarckii and immersive planting are key in creating a sense of mystery as you move along paths, with seating areas hidden and set amongst the planting. The planting design is an ephemeral scheme with a light and airy feel. There are strong seasonal themes where different species take centre stage at different times of year. In autumn dramatic russet tones weave their way through the perennial layer, shrubs and trees. As the colours fade into winter, they are replaced by the silhouettes of seedheads and stems set against a backdrop of structural grasses and shrubs.

Materials have been selected to form a strong connection with the locality, to give the garden its own story, and to allow it to sit comfortably within its surroundings. The subtle buff tones of the Somerset limestone bound gravel paths will compliment the limestone stackers and corten steel, with the former used to announce the entrances into each distinct space. The hard landscaping aims to be subtle and allow the dramatic seasonal displays of planting to take the spotlight.
